Fear 2.0 and Language Learning, with Barbara Sawhill and Ryan Brazell, IALLT 2009, May 28, 2009

Any Moron Can Write a Blog
University of Mary Washington’s Faculty Academy, May 12-15, 2009

In this presentation, I discussed how blogs and wikis were challenging the monopoly of peer review.  Students, when faced with a myriad array of choices, often go with what is easiest.  I discussed how faculty can take advantage of the availability of good academic blogs and use blog writing as a way for students to engage topics more critically and deeply.  I also showed examples of collaborative writing taking place on wikis and explained how that kind of collaborative work can enhance critical thinking and cooperative skills.

Doing the Limbo: Navigating the Space in Between with Barbara Ganley and Nancy White
Northern Voice 2009, February 18-22, 2009

In this presentation, Nancy, Barbara and I discussed the opportunities and challenges of building relationships on and offline and bridging those two worlds.  Increasingly, we are all maintaining networks online with people we know offline.  Virtual tools can facilitate the building of those relationships, but we need to make sure we create connections and not distance through the use of those tools.
